Beacon Rock Estate, Newport RI Grandeur
My son competed in the i420 sailboat World Championships in the Summer of 2019, representing Team USA. I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in Newport, RI while the team was out racing. Here's one of the plein air pieces I did of a local landmark, the Beacon Rock Estate. It was formerly known as the 'Acropolis of Newport' and built by famed architect Stanford White in 1891. In all, it has 48 columns and makes an imposing presence on the harbor. It has had several famous owners including Edwin Morgan, commodore of the NY Yacht Club and several Americas's Cup defenders, as well as artist, Felix De Weldon, who is known for his Battle of Iwo Jima statue in Washington DC. Lastly, the grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, designer of Central Park in NY. I only wish I had painted more of the charming landscape! Alas, the sky opened up with rain so I had to paint parts of this piece from within my car.
